The Peloton Ride event and website was inspired by the suicide death of a close friend and business partner of the founders of the Peloton Ride and the Kintsugi Alliance. He was 59 years old at the time of his suicide death in May 2018. His death took many by surprise as he rarely spoke of his mental health challenges.
Research on the subject revealed troubling statistics:
In Canada, in 2011, there were 3728 suicides. 2781 of these suicides were male (Statistics Canada, 2014).
Men aged 40-60 have the highest number of suicides in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2014).
Women attempt suicide more often than men BUT men die by suicide three times more often than women (Statistics Canada, 2014).
Middle aged men die by suicide more often than any other group
We chose to focus on men’s mental health for the Peloton Ride in order to help affect change with a sector of society that is reluctant to talk about emotions – let alone mental health challenges. By helping men we are also supporting the women in their lives, their children, families, friends and business partners, too.
